Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Gardens Display at the San Diego County Fair Wins Three Awards

The San Diego County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is pleased to announce the chapter’s first ever Ocean Friendly Gardens demonstration garden at the San Diego County Fair has won three awards. The awards include the San Diego County Award, the Environmental Award, and the San Diego Horticultural Society’s Excellence in Horticulture award for Best Expression of Garden Education.

Led by landscape designer Morgan Vondrak of Argia Designs, and built over the course of several weeks by Surfrider San Diego’s Ocean Friendly Gardens Committee, members and volunteers helped roll large boulders into place, build an on-site “surf shack,” lay stone, and plant a variety of native and other low-water use plants. “It really was a fantastic collaborative effort with all of our volunteers pulling from their available resources to make the garden happen,” said Morgan. “For us to be recognized with these awards is really amazing, but most importantly, it shows people are hearing our message. Sustainable landscapes can be not only functional, but beautiful and award-winning!”

Chapter Coordinator Haley Jain Haggerstone was equally excited, saying “The San Diego County Fair is the fifth largest in the U.S., so we are thrilled to have the opportunity to reach so many people with our message of CPR: Conservation, Permeability, and Retention, and how implementing these three concepts can result in a healthier ocean for everyone to enjoy.”

Morgan Vondrak will be giving a presentation on the fair’s Garden Show stage tomorrow – Wednesday, June 13th at 4:00 pm – discussing how homeowners can save money and help the environment through the use of Low Impact Design (LID) in Ocean Friendly Gardens by applying the CPR principles. Susan Krzywicki, chair of the Ocean Friendly Gardens Committee, will also be giving a presentation at the fair on Sunday, July 1st at 1:00 pm titled “Garden Styles with OFG.”

The San Diego County Fair runs through Wednesday, July 4th.

Photos of Surfrider’s award-winning display, as well as the installation process, are available on the chapter’s Ocean Friendly Gardens Facebook page.

Homeowners are invited to the chapter’s upcoming Ocean Friendly Garden Party on Thursday, June 28th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Open to the general public, attendees will learn more about the CPR principles behind Ocean Friendly Gardens, and other chapter programs and events in a fun, informal setting at the Ocean Beach Hotel. Those interested in attending should RSVP at info and include “Garden Party” in the subject heading.

Additional Ocean Friendly Garden criteria and an on-line OFG tracker are available at
