Charlottesville City Council Passes Stormwater ..

Those who live in Charlottesville can soon expect to pay another fee – for water runoff.

City Council passed the stormwater utility fee in a 4-1 vote, with Dave Norris voting against it.

The extra money will help protect area streams and rivers from runoff pollution. The fee targets areas of the city with impervious surfaces that produce the most runoff.

Tuesday night, council heard from those against the fee who would be affected the most: churches. They say the fee will damage their congregations.

“It’s put us now in a place where any new added expense will pose severe hardship. Something will have to go. We will have to cease funding something so I beg you to please leave the churches and tax-exempt folks alone for just a little while longer,” said Dan McBride.

The ordinance will take effect in January 2014 with the first billing period in late April or early May.
