Richmond woman hospitalized after fall on city sidewalk

A South Richmond woman demands something be done about the city’s sidewalks after she tripped on an uneven sidewalk outside her home and was hospitalized.

62-year-old Patricia McBride says, she’s been complaining to the city for years about the sidewalk. On Thursday, McBride was walking to her home when she tripped and fell. She suffered cuts, bruises and says, she now needs dental work.

The day after her fall, the city came out and covered the uneven portion with asphalt but McBride says, that doesn’t fix the problem.

“This tree is going to grows and the sidewalk is going to look like it once was,” said McBride.

City Council member Reva Trammel agrees and put a call to council Monday night to make sidewalk conditions a priority.

A report published by the city auditor last month says, unless council makes sidewalks a priority, the conditions will only get worse.

The city’s report says, only 0.7% of Richmond sidewalks will be fixed over the next two years. What’s worse, the city report found records showed repairs were completed when they actually weren’t.

The report does establish a timeline to address these issues. While some measures are already in place, the report states an expectation that the city meets all goals by July 2014.
