Man shocked, critically injured in Henrico

A man trimming a tree from a lift bucket in Highland Springs was critically injured this evening when he came in contact with a 19,000 volt power line, a Henrico County fire official said.

The man, 30, whose identity was not released, was shocked and was listed in critical but stable condition at VCU Medical Center.

Henrico Fire & EMS Capt. James Mellon said the incident occurred about 6:45 p.m. at the corner of E. Washington Street and N. Kalmia Avenue.

When fire and rescue units arrived, they found the man on the ground, Mellon said, and he was quickly rushed to the hospital.

Witnesses told authorities that the man came in contact with the power line twice before falling out of the bucket. He was caught by his safety harness and bystanders assisted him to the ground before the first fire crew arrived, Mellon said.

Power was disrupted for about 30 minutes to 300 Dominion Virginia Power customers as utility crews checked the lines for damage.
