Man identified in Newport News work-related death

A 39-year-man died Tuesday afternoon following a workplace-related incident in Newport News Tuesday afternoon, city police said.

Police and firefighters were dispatched to Forrest Pine Apartments at 14505 Old Courthouse Way about 12:30 p.m. and discovered a man had fallen about 30 feet from a hydraulic lift, said Scott Liebold, a spokesman for the Newport News Fire Department. He was pronounced dead shortly after firefighters arrived, Liebold said.

The man, later identified as Edward John Downing, Jr., of Hampton, worked for a company called Cut-em Down, said Holly McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Newport News Police Department.

Virginia Department of Labor and Industry spokeswoman Sharon Sykes confirmed the agency is investigating the incident but did not give more details, saying it could take up to six months to complete an investigation.
