VDACS tallies 2013 pesticide haul: 47,500 pounds

RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services removed more than 47,500 pounds of unwanted pesticides last year.

The department’s pesticide disposal program disposes of DDT, arsenic-laced pesticides and a range of other toxic substances from farms, licensed dealers, golf course operators and homeowners. Some of the pesticides have been banned and in storage, awaiting a safe collection and disposal method.

The program is free to eligible participants and is underwritten by pesticide fees collected by the department. Since its inception, the program has collected and destroyed more than 1.2 million pounds of pesticides.

This year the program will target southeast and central Virginia localities.
